Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Annual or perennial succulent herbs or subshrubs.

Stems: Stems erect to prostrate.

Roots: Fibrous root system.

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Surfaces glabrous or pubescent with bladder-like hairs. Margins entire. Sessile, clasping or connate and surrounding the stem. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers solitary in the leaf axils. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Calyx of 5 sepals, connate at base. Corolla (petals) absent. Stamens 5 or numerous, distinct, alternate with the petals or when numerous, inserted on the floral tube. Ovary partly superior, 2–5-celled; styles 2–5 same number as ovary cells.

Fruit: Capsules with circumscissile dehiscience. Seeds 1 to numerous per cell; perisperm oily; starchy; or proteinaceous; true endosperm absent. Stalked.
